Capacity building funds are vital to the growth and sustainability of our nonprofits. Funders recognize the importance of investing in nonprofits to help improve effectiveness at the organizational level.
How do capacity-specific funds help a nonprofit? There are numerous ways these funds can target specific areas of need.
Hiring a consultant to work directly on identified issue(s)
Investing in software and technology
Training staff and board members
Strengthening your organization’s ecosystem
Assessing your overall organization or a specific area such as fundraising
Most nonprofits in Fort Worth are familiar with the North Texas Community Foundation ToolBox Grants. This opportunity is focused on capacity building support for nonprofits who serve the most vulnerable in our community.
As I speak with nonprofits on this funding opportunity, here are my tips:
As always, read the guidelines carefully to see if your organization is a good fit
Make sure your work is focused on poverty in areas of high Social Vulnerability
Interview consultants early to find the best fit for your nonprofit
How will this grant uplift your organization’s capacity to serve more?
Make sure staff and your board are ready to undertake the work if awarded the grant
Examples of ways the grant can be leveraged:
Fundraising trainings for board and staff (all staff should be invited to attend)
Individual coaching in fundraising and nonprofit best practices
Development assessment
Development plan
Grant readiness training and preparation
Strategic planning
While this is a wonderful opportunity, remember this is a very competitive grant cycle. Be prepared and don’t hesitate to reach out for questions.
Cheers,
