ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI, that uses natural language processing to create humanlike conversational dialogue.
ChatGPT was introduced in November 2022 and has taken the world by storm. This tool has been used to write, edit, and enhance written communications by a variety of industries. Now, here are ways to integrate ChatGPT into your fundraising work.
Using ChatGPT
Nonprofits can use the chatbot to promote upcoming events, fundraising campaigns, and other initiatives. The chatbot can be programmed to send personalized messages to donors, reminding them of their previous donations or encouraging them to donate to a new cause. ChatGPT can converse with humans and answer their queries in a natural language and can be integrated into various platforms, such as websites, social media, messaging apps, and more.
Examples:
Draft a donor acknowledgment
Rewrite a current donor letter
Create social media content
Write sections of a grant proposal
Design volunteer guidelines
Edit existing fundraising appeals
Update website content
Draft sponsorship opportunities
Write newsletter articles
Sample Prompts
Write a 500-word article on how ChatGPT can be used in fundraising
Create a fundraising appeal letter for Name of Nonprofit
Write five social media posts for Instagram for a nonprofit fundraising event

Keep a list of prompts and ways to drill down to specific responses. Decide as an organization how and when you’ll use AI tools in your donor communications.
ChatGPT Caveats
Like with any tool or resource, you have to use with caution. Be aware of the tone and language used by ChatGPT. I always have to review and edit anything produced by ChatGPT. I might use one or two sentences generated by a prompt into an article or grant narrative. I want the communications to sound like me and not be artificial.
Also, verify the information created by ChatGPT or any AI tool. Check dates, biographical information, and other key details to confirm accuracy.
Overall, this can be a really helpful way to break writer’s block or add depth to your fundraising work. Building relationships with your donors is always the most important part of fundraising.
Knowing how to use effective prompts and merge with your content is key as well as an efficient use of your valuable time.
