North Texas Giving Day Tips

Started in 2009, North Texas Giving Day, is a regional fundraising campaign organized by the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT).

This year, North Texas Giving Day (NTGD) is Thursday, September 21 and early giving is now open.

Per CFT’s website:

  • In 2022, $62.6 million was raised through 94,385 donors benefiting 3,210 local nonprofits

  • Over $503 million raised in 14 years for our community

  • NTX Giving Day is the largest community-wide giving event in the nation

How does your nonprofit use NTGD to gain new donors or increase giving to your organization? While NTGD can be an effective tool to reach new donors and increase awareness of your organization, consider how much time you can devote to this particular appeal. Do you have other fundraising opportunities around the same timeframe? How much staff time can you devote to NTGD?

When you finalize your development plan and goals for the year, be sure to confirm how much time and resources you plan to devote to NTGD. Being proactive rather than reactive is important. I know many smaller nonprofits make NTGD a major part of their fundraising push while others participate on a much smaller scale.

Other ideas:

  • Involve your board. Setup a giving page for each board member and ask them to champion NTGD with their giving page

  • Have a matching gift incentive

  • Have a specific goal and need in mind. Maybe your organization needs a new van or piece of equipment. Having a tangible item helps donors see how their gift will help.

  • Recruit your top supporters to help champion NTGD on social media

  • Give social media updates throughout the day on your progress to goal; do shout outs to key donors

  • Dedicate time to steward the NTGD donors. I’ve seen some nonprofits call or text donor immediately after receiving notification of their gift. That timely stewardship makes a great impression

  • Don’t over ask your donors. Be mindful of other asks during this time period

Remember, people are giving their donation to CFT and will receive their gift acknowledgement from CFT. Be sure to thank the individuals who gave to NTGD and directed their gift to your organization but don’t send another gift acknowledgment. That step has already been done. Cheers,
